Has Your Organization Done An Executive Development Needs Analysis?

Too many companies make the mistake of choosing executive development programming without first conducting a thorough front-end analysis of their organization’s needs. Executive education author and consultant Jim Bolt summarizes the lack of analysis this way: “Prescription without diagnosis is malpractice.” His advice: avoid the temptation to save money and time by foregoing a thorough needs assessment. A typical front-end analysis should identify the organization’s strategic objectives – usually through a survey and/or in-depth interviews with senior management.

Executive Development Courses Can Give Your Resumé A Shot in the Arm

Specialized executive education courses are an effective way to bolster your resumé – especially during times likes this when there is a lot of turnover and churn in the workplace. William K. Laidlaw Jr., a management professor at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and author of a report titled Trends in Executive Education, says executive development courses can add expertise and beef up their resumés. Executive education courses – everything from finance and marketing to leadership and strategy -- can not only can burnish your credentials but also plug some holes in areas where your competencies may not be as strong.

Transform Your Company’s Approach to Executive Development
 

The resources at the disposal of the manager in charge of  executive development are both improving and proliferating, according to a recent report, "Transforming Corporate Leadership: Best Practices in Executive Education." The report finds that managers who are most keenly aware of their various executive education options and who proactively manage those options are the ones who are best able to optimize executive development for their organizations. The report urges HR professionals or others within the organization who are responsible for executive development to seize on the numerous options available to them in order to transform the way executive development is delivered within their organizations. But there's a caveat: the transformation of executive development will require a sustained effort and a tenacious ability to overcome a number of internal roadblocks.
